The Season of Epiphany

The season of Epiphany often suffers from what comes before and what comes after. The highs of Christmastide and the introspection of Lent can often lead us to see this as simply a “marking-time” season. Yet Epiphany, Greek for “manifestation,” offers us an opportunity to see our own role in the salvation offered by Christ. The light began in that stable at Bethlehem is spread by the grace of God. First to receive it are the shepherds, the Hebrew peasants of the land. Then the gentile kings of the East, the Magi, drawn by the brightness of the star, arrive to offer their mystic gifts. The Word of God spreads, not bound by race or time. Epiphany continues the Feast of the Baptism of Christ that marks Jesus’ growing knowledge and acceptance of his role. At Trinity we were fortunate to be renew our own baptismal vows with the baptism of four of our own. This renewal once again marks our own adult acceptance of the tasks of salvation. We are challenged to bring the Gospel, the Good News of God in Christ, to a broken and needy world, light to the blind, and freedom to the captive. Pray that we may be ready and responsive to that task. Let your light so shine before all people that they may see and give God the glory. Happy Epiphany!
