Epiphany

After the rush of the Christmas season, the Church turns to Epiphany, a Greek word meaning “manifestation.”  This commemorates the Feast of the Epiphany on January 6, Twelfth Night, when the magi from the East arrived at that stable in Bethlehem to present their mystic gifts to the Christ Child.  Gold for a king, frankincense for a priest, and myrrh for burial all signified the roles that this Child was to play in His world.  This manifestation to the gentile lords proclaimed that God’s salvation was for all of humanity, not limited by religion, or race, or time.  The message then of Epiphany is that this Gospel, this Good News, is given to a larger and larger world, as the ripples from a stone thrown into a pod spread to its farthest shore.  And it is our message, and our call given at our own baptism, to be the messengers, the evangelists, of that Good News to a broken and needy world.  Pray God we may be worthy messengers.

Faithfully,

Dick Wyland
